Mr. Huynh Minh Tuan, Vice Chairman of Dong Thap Provincial People’s Committee has just issued a plan to develop this local mango industry to 2025. In which, striving to 2025 to plant new and renovate old and inefficient mango orchards are: 4,450 hectares.

Dong Thap province continues to select two main mango varieties, Cat Chu and Cat Hoa Loc, to put them into production. Prioritize the development of trademarks and geographical indications of Cao Lanh mango in markets that have imported Vietnamese mangoes.

The plan of Dong Thap province also aims to attract new investment in a mango and mango by-product processing plant with a capacity of 30,000 tons/year, 5 times higher than the figure of 2020.

Dong Thap province also set a target that the local mango storage time can last up to 2 months.

By 2025, there will be 11,000 hectares of growing areas and establishments operating in the field of preliminary processing and packaging of mangoes for export, all of which will be granted codes, accounting for 100% of the area eligible for issuance of planting area codes as prescribed.

Striving to 2025, cooperatives, cooperative groups, assembly halls with mango growing area will be certified for food safety, standards of good agricultural production practice (GAP) with traceability and stickers. geographical indication stamps for products with a product consumption association contract with a business dealing in fresh mango products reached 20%.

Dong Thap province also set a target that the area for conversion of “organic” and “organic” mango production by 2025 will reach 2%, equivalent to an area of ​​293 hectares.

Striving to synchronously apply post-harvest technology, including transportation, sorting, stem cutting, latex treatment, washing, drying and labeling; packaging, applying technology of saturated steam treatment (insect treatment) and super-fast freezing with liquid (freezing whole fruit), reducing loss rate, increasing mango fruit quality, reducing loss at least 20% post-harvest.

The plan also aims to synchronously apply scientific advances, advanced production processes and improve the value chain of the commodity industry on the basis of reorganizing production and arranging the participating factors inside the mango industry. In order to maximize added value, increase income for mango growers, the additional profit of the industry is at least 15%/year.

At the conference on developing the mango industry of Dong Thap province in July 2022, Mr. Le Quoc Dien, deputy director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Dong Thap province, said that the local mango output reached about 129,000 tons per year, concentrated in Cao Lanh city and Cao Lanh and Thanh Binh districts, of which, about 65% of production is exported and 35% consumed domestically.

The report of the General Department of Customs shows that, in the fresh fruit export segment, mango is one of the four fruits with the largest export turnover of Vietnam after dragon fruit, banana and jackfruit.
