Fruit and vegetable exports in the first quarter declined sharply in China, but grew positively to markets with high export value such as the US, Japan, and South Korea.

According to the Import-Export Department (Ministry of Industry and Trade), in March, the export value of vegetables and fruits reached 344 million USD, down 14% compared to March 2021.

Generally in the first quarter, Vietnam’s fruit and vegetable export turnover reached US$849 million, down 12% over the same period in 2021 because of “traffic jams” to China, the largest market for Vietnamese vegetables and fruits.

Specifically, the export of vegetables and fruits to China only reached 455 million USD, down 25% over the same period in 2021, down 9.5 percentage points over the same period in 2021.

The increasing epidemic situation in the Chinese market and the current anti-epidemic policy of China have affected the supply of Vietnamese fruit and vegetables to this market.

While exports of fruit and vegetables to China dropped sharply, exports to other markets such as the US, South Korea, Japan, Australia, and Taiwan grew well in the first quarter.

Notably, the export of vegetables and fruits to the US reached 62 million USD, up 68% over the same period in 2021.

With high incomes, the culinary trend is increasingly focusing on vegetable and fruit ingredients of American consumers, along with a diversified and multi-level distribution system, the US is considered as a potential import market for fruits and vegetables. Vietnamese tree.

Recently, in a meeting with US Ambassador Marc E. Knapper, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Le Minh Hoan proposed the US side to support Vietnam in exporting pomelo to this market.

If approved, grapefruit will be the 7th fruit of Vietnam to be exported to the US market. Previously, the US has licensed to import 6 types of fresh fruit from Vietnam, including: mango, longan, litchi, dragon fruit, rambutan and breast milk. Some other fruits such as coconut and durian are still exported to the US but as frozen products.
