Fruit and vegetable export is difficult to reach the target of $ 3.5 billion despite receiving a lot of good news from the Chinese market

Vinafruit’s representative said that exporting vegetables and fruits in 2022 is difficult to reach the target of $ 3.5 billion because China is still maintaining the Zero COVID policy, high-value items such as durian are at the end of the season. However, this expert predicts that 2023 will be a boom year for the fruit and vegetable industry.

According to statistics of the General Department of Customs, in August, fruit and vegetable exports reached 273 million, up 9% compared to July. Accumulated in the first 8 months of the year, fruit and vegetable exports reached nearly 2.2 billion USD, down 13%. compared to the same period in 2021.

In which, the export of vegetables and fruits to the main market, China, recorded a decrease of 32.5% compared to the same period in 2021 with $ 967.5 million. China’s approval for Vietnam to officially export durian and passion fruit to this market also raises many expectations that vegetable and fruit export turnover will prosper after a long period of gloom.

Talking to the writer, Mr. Dang Phuc Nguyen, General Secretary of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association (Vinafruit) said that in the first 8 months of the year, the average export turnover of vegetables and fruits was about 250-260 million USD/month.

“With this growth momentum, fruit and vegetable exports in 2022 are unlikely to reach the $3.5 billion mark and the positive figure is $3.1-3.2 billion, equivalent to a 10% decrease compared to 2021.” Nguyen predicted.

The reason, Vinafruit representative said that fruit and vegetable exports in 2022 will go backwards because China is still maintaining the Zero COVID policy, while other markets such as the EU, US, Japan, and South Korea have good growth but prices value is not high, can not fill the gap in the Chinese market.

On the other hand, durian products are about to be exported for the first time, but now is the end of the season, the output for harvesting is not much; while passion fruit has only been piloted for export, the quantity and turnover is not large.

Therefore, the last 4 months of 2022 is the time when Vietnam promotes the export of the first orders, explores the market to prepare for the boom of 2023.

“Vietnam’s fruit and vegetable exports will boom in 2023, especially in the Chinese market. The recent drought in China has damaged many areas of dragon fruit and fruit trees, so the country will increase imports to meet domestic demand.

In addition, until the durian crop itself (May 4, 2023), Vietnam will continue to complete the procedures for China to issue more planting area codes and packing facilities. The export of this high-value fruit will help the overall turnover grow strongly,” said Nguyen.

On the other hand, other markets such as the US, EU, Japan, and South Korea will continue the growth momentum of 2021 because consumers tend to care about health and consume more vegetables and fruits after COVID-19.
